Swanburrow

Swanburrow was a female Dane, who initially lived in Grimsby during the 9th century. One of the inhabitants of Grimsby, Swanburrow happened to be the love of one of Lincoln's lord, Hunwald, the son of the late Ealdorman Hundbeorht of Lincolnscire.

Biography

Little is known about her past, though Swanburrow appeared to be Hunwald's "Dane ladylove". Swanburrow was also one of many Danes in Lincolnscire that lived in a village near the water called Grimsby. There are brief mentions of Hunwald mentioning his ladylove, as he kept professing his love towards anyone who either insulted him for it or was in disbelief of it.

In 875, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan went to find Hunwald, who ran off after hearing confirmation of the death of his father. After finding and consoling him near a grand red oak tree, Eivor saw a engraving on the tree that read "Hunwald and Swanburrow." After drinking their sorrows away, Hunwald and Eivor went to Grimsby, where Hunwald realized that his love, Swanburrow, may also be in danger. On the ride there, Hunwald and Eivor nearly survived an ambush from Saxon soldiers.

After defeating the assailants, Eivor and Hunwald travelled to Grimsby, to find a woman praying to a Odin statue on top of a hill. The woman was his love, Swanburrow, and both she and Hunwald embraced each other after a long period apart. After brief introductions, Eivor and Hunwald recounted the events of the ambushes they faced and the passing of Hunwald's father. Swanburrow and Hunwald agreed to wait at her home until the moot, while Swanburrow declared to kill any possible invaders with her blade. Meanwhile, Swanburrow kept a letter from Hunwald, who described the events of his exile and his hope with finding help from a "newly settled camp."

After the shiremoot, Eivor became the deciding vote on who became the new ealdorman of Lincolnscire. After the vote, Bishop Herefrith declared war on the shire as he revealed himself to be The Crozier of the Order of the Ancients. Following Herefrith's assassination by Eivor's hands during the siege on Anecastre, the new ealdorman was ready to lead his shire without any more interference from the Order. In effect, Swanburrow became a part of the Raven Clan. After she secured an alliance, Eivor headed home to report to Randvi.

In 878, Eivor called all her allies, including Hunwald, to fight against King Alfred in the battle at the village of Cippanhamm. During the battle, Hunwald was sadly one of the casualties of the battle as Eivor wept after hearing his last words. Returning to Ravensthorpe, Eivor first found Swanburrow and delivered the unfortunate news to Swanburrow. Crying, Swanburrow was comforted by Eivor, who consoled her and let her know that the clan was here for her. After reporting to Randvi, Swanburrow was still seen around Ravensthorpe. After Hunwald's death, Eivor made a burial for him, besides Dag Nithisson and Svend, while Swanburrow left a note of her undying love for him.

Behind the Scenes

Swanburrow is a character appearing in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, where she is portrayed by Salóme Gunnarsdóttir, who also provides the voice for Eydis.

In the memory "A Sword-Shower in Anecastre" if the player chooses Aelfgar or Herefrith as ealdorman, Hunwald asked for both him and Swanburrow to live in Ravensthorpe (after the events of the memory play out). The two then have their own house in the settlement. However, if Hunwald is ealdorman, Swanburrow will live in the house alone.
