Sulke

Sulke was a Norse merchant who lived during the 9th century.

Biography

Originally from the village on Heillboer in Rygjafylke, Sulke fled from the village during a raid conducted by Kjotve the Cruel that led to deaths of numerous villagers including Eivor's parents Rosta and Varin. When the settlement was subsequently abandoned, Sulke returned and looted what remains in order to sell them for a living, including a helmet belonging to Varin. Eventually, Sulke salvaged what he could and opened a shop in Stavanger to sell the items.[1]

In 872, Sulke was visited by a now adult Eivor, who sought interest on what he sold. Sulke later discovered Eivor's identity after she was able to recognise the items on display. After being accused of betraying Heillboer, Sulke fled, fearing for his life. However, Eivor caught up easily and Sulke tried to plea for his case, claiming that he had no involvement with Kjotve's raid. Sulke later allowed Eivor to take anything she wanted in exchange for letting him live.[1]
