Rajah Humabon was a King of Cebu who ruled during the 16th century.
Biography
In 1521, Humabon met the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan who was leading an expedition to seemingly discover gold and spices. Magellan convinced Humabon to convert to Catholicism and to turn Cebu into a colony of the Spanish Empire.[1]
In reality, the expedition was a façade for Magellan's attempt to locate a treasure left behind by the Isu, which he had managed to track to Cebu. Although the explorer succeeded in finding the artifact, Humabon informed him that it was but one of several relics. Magellan used this information to lead an army to the neighboring Mactan Island to claim another one of the artifacts from its chieftan Lapu-Lapu, though this resulted in the Spanish forces being defeated and Magellan's death.[1]
