King's Land

King's Land is a small area in 9th century Durrow, Ireland. This area was the home base of the High King Flann Sinna, who had his war meetings inside the main building.

History

In the late 9th century, the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan and her cousin Bárid mac Ímair, King of Dublin, met with Flann in King's Land. From their meeting, Flann dictated that a raid by Dublin Danes happened during his coronation resulted in the theft of the holy scripture, The Book of Kells. Working to better the relationship between Flann and her cousin, Eivor decided to help and get the book back. After investigating Inchroe and Thorstein once more, Eivor retrieved the book from Boyne Tombs. Back at King's Land, Eivor saw Flann, Bárid, and Abbot Eogan mac Cartaigh discussing the book's theft. Despite succeeding in her task, Eogan reminded Flann of the implications he showed by working with Vikings. Nonetheless, Eogan left with the book as Flann told Eivor to talk with Ciara about gaining aid from the kings of Connacht.[1]

Eivor met with Ciara, who stated how there were royal demands from the kings of Connacht to do in order to help gain support. Ciara described the use of the pigeon coops around the region to help her choose and increase good influence among the Connacht kings. Outside the building in King's Land, Eivor caught sight of a pigeon coop and accepted three royal demands. Within time, Eivor completed every one of the royal demands.[2]

In 882, after the death of the Ollamh Druid known as "The Oak" who led the cult of the Children of Danu,[3] Eivor attended a council in King's Land held by the kings of Ireland, Flann, Ciara, and Sichfrith, the new king of Dublin. During the meeting, the idea of a druid inquisition was proposed, due to Abbot Eogan's betrayal and the other kings' fears over the threat the druidic cult posed to the Norse-Gaelic Christians. Despite Ciara's words of opposition, Flann initially concluded that any druid must either reform or be exiled from Ireland, while Ciara stormed out. This meeting led Ciara to feel bereft and take action herself.[4]
