The Herat Citadel, also known as the Citadel of Alexander, is a large fort located in the center of Herat, Afghanistan.
Layout
The Citadel is fashioned in the shape of an older, rectangular compound to the east, about eighteen meters by forty-two meters, protected with thirteen towers, all made of fired bricks, called the Upper Citadel. The Lower Citadel has lower walls of baked bricks and has a polygonal shape about twenty-five by sixty meters, with nine circular towers. In the light of the dawning sun, the citadel looks like a gigantic castle of sand.[1]
History
Supposedly built around 330 BCE, when Alexander the Great arrived in the area, the citadel served as a military stronghold for many empires for over two millennia.[1]

In 1841, the Herat Citidel was occupied by British soldiers under the command of Master Templar William Sleeman, who wanted to access the Precursor Temple underneath the structure. At the same time, the Indian Assassin Arbaaz Mir infiltrated the fortress with the very same purpose,[2] using the battle raging outside its walls as a distraction for the guards.[3]
By the middle of the 20th century, the citadel was left in despair so much that it came close to destruction. It was soon progressively restored by various organizations and businesses up to 2011.[1]
