George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland (1784 – 1849) was an English politician and colonial administrator, serving as Governor-General of India from 1836 to 1842.
Biography
Throughout his life, Auckland served as First Lord of the Admiralty three times. After being appointed Governor-General of India in 1836, he became vital in the expansion of commercial industry in the region. With political complications arising in Afghanistan, Auckland pushed for an invasion and provided cannons for Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The resulting conflict became known as the First Anglo-Afghan War, or "Auckland's Folly". After the war ended in disaster for the British in 1842, he was replaced and sent back to England.[1]
