Escanceaster Monastery was an Anglo-Saxon Christian monastery build along the River Exe in the eastern part of the region, southeast of the Village of Simonsbath.
In the 9th century, a sizeable force of soldiers attacked the monastery and killed the all monks, piling up their corpses. It was raided multiple times by Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, Vagn and their raiding crew on her longship. During one of these raids, she discovered a clue of the whereabouts of Saint George's armour set.[1]
