Charleston, previously known as Charles-Towne, is the oldest and largest city in South Carolina.

History

In 1670, Charles-Towne was founded and would grow to become Charleston, one of colonial America's busiest ports.[1]

On 22 May 1718, the pirate Edward Thatch and his fleet entered the Charleston harbor bay in South Carolina.[2] For several days, he laid siege to the city, holding several Royal Navy sailors hostage in exchange for medicines needed to save the people of Nassau. With a lack of response from the authorities, Thatch's fellow pirate Edward Kenway infiltrated Charles-Towne and stole the medical supplies, as well as the recipes for making additional doses. He also killed the British captain Wyatt.[3]

The taverns in Charles-Towne were famous among the merchants who operated in the American colonies in the early 18th century, and would host numerous social gatherings where business was discussed. In 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, the Colonial Assassins aided the Continental Army in preventing the Royal Navy from capturing the city.[6] Three years later, the Assassins returned to eliminate the Templar associate Hugh Jackson at the Battle of Stono Ferry.[7]
