Bernard (c. 870 – 891/892) was the illegitimate son of King Charles the Fat, born to him and an unknown concubine. Being the only son of King Charles, Bernard was raised to become the inheritor of the throne by Charles and the king's wife Richardis, who both had different reasons for doing so.[1] Despite not being her own biological son, Richardis raised and sheltered Bernard as her own and kept him away from Charles, wishing for him not to end up like his father.[2]
