Tedmund (died 874) was a thegn whom King Alfred of Wessex chose to be the next ealdorman of Cent, England, in 874.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Not much is known about Tedmund, except that he was a thegn of Cent and, as of 874, had recently hired a former monk, Shergar, to act as his body double. When the Viking expansion happened in England, Tedmund, fearful of the invaders, became a recluse within Rouecistre Fortress[1]
When Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan and her allies, the Hidden One Basim ibn Ishaq, and the Mercian thegn Geadric came to storm Rouecistre Fortress, Tedmund held his position at the stronghold's main tower. After Eivor defeated his soldiers, Tedmund came face-to-face with the Viking, who ultimately bested him. As Basim also joined the fight, Tedmund was captured and brought to the entrance of the fortress.[2]
At the entrance, Tedmund witnessed the arrival of Abbot Cynebert, who was secretly allied with Eivor and Basim and performed his part in their shadow play as Tedmund's "rescuer". He demanded his release, but just as Tedmund grew suspicious of the situation, he suddenly began to cough. After claiming that he could not breathe, he collapsed in front of everyone and was quickly declared dead. With his demise, Cynebert's plan to "save" Tedmund and earn his favor ended in failure.[2]
