"Egyptians all! Rome will be your wise Master!"
―Tacito, 38 BCE.[src]-[m]

Tacito (died 38 BCE) was a Roman legate who oversaw the Klysma Quarry in the Sinai, Egypt. He was also a member of the Order of the Ancients, serving under Gaius Julius Rufio and using The Executioner as his cryptonym.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Tacito originated from the city of Cyrene in Cyrenaica, which was a province of the Roman Republic.[1] By 38 BCE, he had joined both the Roman army and the Order of the Ancient and became a lieutenant under Rufio. Alongside Ampelius and Ptahmose, he was later sent to the Sinai Peninsula, where he was placed in charge of overseeing the Klysma Quarry.[2]

During his tenure, Tacito would come into conflict with the native Nabataeans, capturing and imprisoning them in a Roman camp near the quarry. He would also stage several executions as a message and warning to the workers if they would ever rebel against the Romans.[1]

That year, the Hidden One Bayek of Siwa traveled to the Sinai to assist Tahira and the Nabataean rebellion against the Romans. Hoping to lure out Rufio, Bayek resolved to assassinate his lieutenants, including Tacito.[3] While giving a speech in the quarry to the workers and the captive rebels, Tacito was killed by Bayek, who subsequently freed the captive rebels, initiating a rebellion at the quarry that saw it liberated from Roman control.[1]
