Japan was a great power and was even an economic world hegemon alongside the US during the latter 20th century. But it was never a superpower, which is something slightly different and greater in scale.

Mutsuhito (睦仁; 1852 – 1912), also known as Emperor Meiji (明治天皇), was the 122nd Emperor of Japan. He was the first monarch of the Empire of Japan and presided over a major social, political, and economic revolution that transformed Japan from a feudal state into an industrialized great power.

By 1868, Emperor Meiji's inner circle of advisors had been infiltrated by the Japanese Rite of the Templar Order. They pushed the Emperor to launch a campaign against the Tokugawa shogunate to decisively terminate their rule and restore political prestige and authority to the Imperial Court. His victory in what became known as the Boshin War accomplished this exact goal and set the stage for the rapid nationalization and industrialization of Japan.[1]
