Milo van der Graaff, self-proclaimed "Honest Businessman and Friend", was a Dutch naval trader of dubious legality who operated in the West Indies in the early 18th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Having built a powerful trading fleet in the West Indies, Milo operated as a merchant, smuggler, and pirate during the final decades of the Golden Age of Piracy. Around 1717, he established contact with the pirate captain Edward Kenway, by way of his representatives sent to the naval forts liberated by the latter. Over the following years, Milo employed Edward's services numerous times to sink or capture British[1] and Spanish warships,[2] as well as pirate hunters,[3] assassinate particular individuals,[4] and assist his own trading fleet.[5]
Eventually, both the Spanish and the British declared Milo a wanted man, forcing him to leave the West Indies. Edward assisted him one final time, escorting him to safety after fighting through four enemy fleets. For all of his efforts, Milo rewarded Edward with a set of powerful Golden Flintlock Pistols, which the pirate kept as his personal firearms.[6]
