James of Crannach (c. 1276 - 1297) was a member of the Scottish Brotherhood of Assassins and the apprentice of Thomas of Balmerino.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Betraying the Assassins[edit | edit source]
James joined the Brotherhood in 1295 as an apprentice to the Assassin leader Thomas of Balmerino.[1] However, wanting more than his current station, he started working for the Templars, especially with the Lann Fala. Serving the Templars in secret,[2] he relayed information based on any news of the remaining survivors of the Children of Fal and the Stone of Fal.[3]
Work as a spy[edit | edit source]
In 1296, James met Fillan the day after he had arrived at Scone. Both discussed their upbringing and their current association with the Brotherhood before Fillan left to join the Assassin council back in the vault.[1] However, he told the Lann Fala of Fillan's presence at the Assassin base, which led to the Lann Fala attacking the next day. Fortunately, the Assassins and their allies survived.[3]
In May 1297, James accompanied William Wallace to Lanark, where he encountered Fillan again on Lanarkshire. However, James managed to have Fillan tasked to assassinate Commander Bradley Dacre, an old associate of the Brotherhood, as a means to kill Fillan. Meanwhile, James and William, along with the aid of Sören and his mercenaries, assassinated William Heselrig, an ally to the Lann Fala.[4]
Fortunately, James' plan failed as Fillan and his sister Ailéas managed to kill the Lann Fala soldier sent after Fillan. With the twins and the mercenaries, he still aided in the revolt against the English military.[5] James was soon separated from William, who was chased off from Scone by the English. Leading a group of William's men on the Isle of Mull, James and Wallace's men were soon found by the twins, the Assassin spy Deorsa, and the druidess Moira. Together, they rode to Iona to stop the Templars, but fought against English soldiers on the way. Faking an injury, James asked to be left behind, but Fillan managed to bring him along to Iona. When they arrived at Iona Abbey, they saw Cornavii and his men killing the guards and in possession of the stone.[6]
Death[edit | edit source]
Facing off against the Lann Fala, James noticed Sören, who used the thunder from the storm to nearly assassinate Cornavii. Shouting a warning to Cornavii, he revealed himself to be the mole while slicing Deorsa's neck simultaneously. Attacking Ailéas, James managed to overpower her and held her hostage to force his former allies to surrender. However, Fillan shouted at him to distract him while Moira threw a potion to blind him. In the moment of confusion, Ailéas broke free from James' hold and managed to kill him with her sword.[2]
