Hodda Shelter (Runic: ᚼᚬᛏᛏᛅ ᛋᚼᛅᛚᛏᛅᛦ) was a dwarven shelter in Vangrinn, Svartálfaheimr. During the warlord Surtr's invasion of the realm, dwarven survivors escaped the war and fled to the shelter set up by the Sons of Ivaldi.
History[edit | edit source]
In Eivor Varinsdottir's visions of Odin's time in Svartalfheim, the Æsir lord Havi found the Hodda Shelter[1] and asked the dwarven fugitives who led the shelter. Being told it was both dwarven brothers and blacksmiths Sindri and Brokkr, Havi waited till nightfall to talk with Brokkr while learning Sindri had been missing. In the center of the shelter, he came across both Brokkr and Ivaldi arguing about their skill sets. Wondering where Sindri was, Havi asked Brokkr if he found him but Brokkr stated he probably went to Alethorp to seek out some sweet mead. With that information, Havi left to locate Sindri while Ivaldi and Brokkr kept arguing.[2]
However, after his investigation, Havi returned to the shelter with Sindri's corpse as he determined that Sindri's hugr was stolen by Calder earlier with the Salakar. The shelter's community and Brokkr saw Havi with Sindri's body and immediately started to set up a funeral just outside the shelter.[2] Manipulating the situation, Havi had Ivaldi speak at the service while preparing the last rites himself. After the funeral, he encouraged Brokkr to aid Ivaldi on inspecting the Salakar.[3] Within the shelter, Havi was visited by his ally Eysa as she stated that her stepmother Sinmara was not willing to trade the Salakar for Havi's son Baldr.[4]
While Eysa divulged of Sinmara's current war plans, Havi saw an opportunity to destroy Sinmara's resources and infantry from Eysa's information. He told both Ivaldi and Brokkr to continue their work on the Salakar before he left.[4] After Havi destroyed Sinmara's plans, he went back to the shelter and asked Ivaldi and Brokkr of their work. All they learned is that besides the hugrs of Malvigr, Calder, and a "dwarf" they saw, they cannot identify a certain hugr inside. Brokkr also told Havi that Eysa came and said that Sinmara was willing to trade the Salakar for Baldr. With an opportunity to save his son, Havi took the Salakar and left for Feigardr to barter with Surtr's wife.[5]
However, the trade was a farce as Havi learned Baldr was dead all along with his hugr already in the Salakar. Although he killed Sinmara, Havi deserted his plans in the realm, left the Salakar at the shelter, and left for days.[5] Upon returning to Hodda Shelter, he saw the dwarven fugitives were besieged by Muspel warriors and quickly defeated them. He later talked with Ivaldi, who disclosed that Brokkr took the Salakar to Eitri as Havi left to find both Brokkr and the Salakar and fight against Surtr one last time.[6]
After fighting and killing Surtr one last time, he ventured back to Hodda Shelter to tell the community the good news. However, the dwarves looked dissatisfied as Hyrrokin appeared. She chastised him for the terror he committed in his wake as well as telling Havi of the armies marching against him from Loki, Múspellsheimr, and Suttungr for all his past transgressions. With no hesitation, Havi welcomed all quarrels as Hyrrokin revealed that when Havi killed Surtr with his sword, he unwillingly initiated Ragnarök. Before she left, Havi gave her the location for the Salakar at Maekinn to help her regain her lost love. However, he knew if she could release all the hugrs inside, Baldr may be free from the device.[6]
When he revisited Hodda shelter, Havi also found the dwarven fugitives he saved from their Muspels and jötnar captors as they gave him gifts and resources in return for rescuing them.[7]
