Five Points (or The Five Points) was a poverty stricken, disease-ridden, and crime-infested neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, during the 19th century. Throughout the 20th century, the neighborhood was slowly redeveloped and absorbed into surrounding areas.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In July 1863, American Templar Grand Master Boss Tweed discussed with his informant that the gangs of the Five Points and the waterfront wouldn't be strong enough without the Bowery Boys in the upcoming Templar-planned riot. His informant assured him they were involved, despite someone working with Reddy the Blacksmith to keep them out. Still wary of possible Assassin interference, Tweed ordered the informant to uncover the threat. Later that night, before he could report back, the informant was silently eliminated.[2]
The following night, 12 July, at an opera performance by Adelina Patti at Niblo's Garden, Patti overheard a conversation between two wealthy women discussing the draft and how their sons wouldn't be fighting due to a simple three-hundred-dollar fee of the Conscription Act. Patti thought to herself that such a fee wouldn't seem so simple to the poor denizens of Five Points or the Bowery. After her performance, Patti traveled via carriage up Broadway, towards the Fifth Avenue Hotel, where she was staying. Observing the men outside, Patti thought that they looked like the ruffians that ruled Five Points or the Bowery. She was very shortly afterwards accosted by such men.[3]
Patti was later rescued by the policeman Tommy Greyling after he witnessed suspicious Irish-looking Five Points men carrying weapons. After getting her to safety, Greyling realised the implications of what those men were planning to do, as the gangs of the Bowery, Five Points, and Fourth Ward all joined forces to begin a massive riot.[4] Elsewhere in the city, the Assassin Varius came to the same conclusion. On his way to the Astor House, he moved through Paradise Square and through to the heart of Five Points, the local Roach Guards gang territory.[5]
A couple of days later, with the rioting in full swing, the neighborhood was mostly empty as many of the gang members had relocated elsewhere. This allowed Varius and his new protégé Eliza to freerun over the rooftops while he gave her tips on how to use her Eagle Vision and explained their task of retrieving a Piece of Eden stolen by the Templar Cudgel Cormac.[6]
