A Venetian Agile

Agiles were lightly-armored guards employed by garrisons and armies during the Renaissance. They exceled at speed and agility, being able to easily dodge strikes and deliver an attack of their own. Due to their agility, they were often tasked with delivering or recovering important items and messages.

Characteristics and skills[edit | edit source]

Agiles were equipped with light leather armor, allowing them to run much faster than their comrades. Their speed was able to surpass even that of a trained Assassin like Ezio Auditore da Firenze. However, their light armor was also their greatest weakness as it did not provide much protection against attacks.[1]

To not hinder their own agility, Agiles were exclusively armed with daggers, which allowed them to quickly deliver strikes on their opponents, while also dodging attacks at the same time.[1]

Ezio Auditore fighting an Agile

Should their opponents decide to flee, Agiles could easily catch up with them and strike the fleeing targets to hinder them and allow their slower comrades to catch up.[1]

Agiles employed by the Borgia in Rome were generally far superior to those found in other cities during the Renaissance, being much quicker and equipped with higher-quality weapons and armor.[2]

The Agiles employed by the Ottoman army in Constantinople were armed with throwing knives in addition to their regular daggers, allowing them to deliver an even faster attack and deny their opponents time to defend. However, despite their impressive agility, they were still not able to dodge the ranged attacks from crossbows or throwing knives.[3]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Agiles are an enemy archetype featured in the 2009 video game Assassin's Creed II and its sequels, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Later games in the series would feature similar archetypes, such as the Scouts in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin's Creed: Rogue, and the Reavers in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla.

The Cento Occhi, Followers of Romulus, Hermeticists, and thieves, including characters like La Volpe and Rosa, all possess freerunning capabilities similar to those of Agiles. Papal Guards and Janissaries also possessed the same speed and agility as Agiles despite being much taller and of heavier build.

Like those of other guards based in Italian cities, the daggers wielded by Agiles are randomly generated based on those Ezio can purchase from blacksmiths. On the other hand, Agiles hailing from the Ottoman army all wield the same dagger: the Kurdish Jambiya.
