Cenwalh (died 672) was King of Wessex from 642 to 645, and later from 648 until his death in 672.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Suceeding his father Cynegils, who was described by Wessexians as 'pious and godly', Cenwalh was said to have refused to follow and embrace the teachings of Christianity.[1] Cenwalh later went into exile until 645 after being defeated by King Penda of Mercia in a war over Penda's sister that Cenwalh took as his spouse before taking Seaxburh as his second wife.[2]

Around 640, Cenwalh, together with the Frankish missionary Birinus, built the first cathedral of Wessex.[3]

After returning to kingship in 648, Cenwalh sought to make amends for his Christian faith and thus ordered the contruction of The Old Minster in Wincestre.[1]
