A Proper Shipwright was a virtual representation of one of Edward Kenway's genetic memories, relived by an Animus user in 2096 through the Animus EGO.

Description

Edward set out to rescue the captured shipwright Lucy Baldwin and recruit her for the Jackdaw's crew.

Dialogue

Having tracked Lucy's location to a Royal Navy Man O' War near Salt Key Bank in Dry Tortuga, Kenway sneaked aboard the ship and made his way below decks. He entered a partitioned brig, which was guarded by a squad of British Army redcoats. Quickly eliminating a pair of them in the brig's first section, he stealthily approached closer, eavesdropping on the squadmates' conversation.

• British soldier 1: How'd they catch her?
• British soldier 2: I didn't hear, only that she fought like a Banshee. It took three men to hold her, and she's no bigger than a cabin boy.
• Edward: I must be close.

He killed the two guards in the next section and entered where the prison cell was built into the last room. Entering, he heard Lucy mocking the final guard who stood at her cage.

• Lucy: You're short for a soldier. Is the Governor taking children into his service now?
• British soldier 3: You've got a mouth on you, you little bilge rat.
• Lucy: Christ! And your breath smells like money ass.
• British soldier 3: We'll see how smart you are when the rope's around your neck, and you dance the hempen jig.

Edward crept up and quietly killed the man from behind.

• Edward: You alright?
• Lucy: And who in blazes are you?

Looting the corpse, Edward recovered a set of keys and opened Lucy's cell. She stared up at him in surprise from where she sat on the floor.

• Edward: I'm your passage out of here. Quickly.

Lucy furrowed her brow, skeptical of his motives, and looked away.

• Lucy: I don't know you from Blind Bart.
• Edward: I need a shipwright, and you're in need of better lodgings.

Suddenly, the ship shuddered from a strong cannon blast it received on deck. An alarm horn sounded and Edward looked around anxiously assessing the brig and inner hull's structural integrity.

• Edward: That's it, time to go. It's me or the hangman.

Lucy stepped out of the cage and looked up at the ceiling, also worried.

• Lucy: You make a fine argument. Lead on.

She followed him back up to the deck and the pair descended to the waiting Jackdaw moored on the port side. When the crew released the tow lines, Edward took the helm and sailed out from the Man o' War's shadow. Lucy stood beside him on the quarterdeck.

• Edward: You've pissed off some powerful people.
• Lucy: I wish I could take credit. I've been stitched up.

Having heard the same tale countless times, Edward was dubious.

• Edward: You and every pirate on the open seas, lass.

Adéwalé noticed an escort fleet nearing to investigate the unusual activity.

• Adéwalé: British ships!

Lucy inspected the brig from where she stood.

• Lucy: It's a decent enough tub.

Slighted at the comment, Edward defended his vessel.

• Edward: The Jackdaw's no tub, I promise you.

He called out to his crew as they manned the cannons to sink the fleet.

• Edward: New crew onboard. Lucy Baldwin. Shipwright and scourge of the Caribbean.
• Adéwalé: Welcome aboard.

Despite his greeting, Lucy replied nervously as Edward positioned the Jackdaw into firing range and commenced naval combat.

• Lucy: I'm keen to get some distance from this place.

Edward made short work of the fleet, sinking ships or boarding them to kill the crew and loot the vessel. The crew celebrated, glad to have beaten their opposition; a beeming Edward turned to face Lucy with hands proudly placed on his hips.

• Edward: Welcome to the Jackdaw, shipwright. You can see for yourself, she's no slouch.

Lucy nodded in agreement and smiled.

• Lucy: You're ship proud. I respect that.
• Edward: She could use some work, if I'm honest. We need your skill. What say you to joining us?

Lucy put a hand to her chin in brief thought then lowered it.

• Lucy:' You don't mince words, do you?

She turned to walk to the ship's stern to begin a thorough look-over.

• Lucy: I suppose I could look around, see what needs doing.

Only a few steps away, she faced Edward again, a new thought on her mind.

• Lucy: First I need a decent drink. I had nothing but fouled water in that cell for days.

Edward laughed and took the helm again.

• Edward: It's a matter of some urgency, then. We'll have to go ashore.

He sailed back to Great Inagua, where he knew he had safehaven and ample supplies.

Outcome

Edward freed Lucy from imprisonment, eliminated British pursuit, and strongly hinted that Lucy join his crew in return for his having saved her life.

Behind the scenes

In early previews of this mission, the Animus HUD showed that it initially was titled "Wanted" and that the subsequent one was titled "The Hut" before it was finalized to "The One With the Gun".
