Berkshire (Old English: Bearrocscire) is a county in the South East of England. The River Thames forms the northern border of the county.[1] According to Asser's biography of King Alfred, Berkshire takes its name from a wood of box trees, which was called Bearroc[2] (a Celtic word meaning "hilly").

Viking Age[edit | edit source]
Alfred the Great, future King of the Anglo-Saxons was born in Berkshire, in the town of Wantage in 849.[3]
The Battle of Ashdown was fought in Berkshire in 871. During the battle between the Great Heathen Army and the forces of King Athelred I of Wessex, jarl Osbern was killed.[4]
In 878, Alfred the Great gained command of the fyrd of Berkshire, and sent them to overlook the River Thames and the Icknield Way, as Alfred predicted that Guthrum's army would march from this direction towards the Battle of Chippenham.[5]
Victorian Era[edit | edit source]
In 1863, Broadmoor Asylum was opened, taking some patients from Bethlem Royal Hospital in the process.[6]
