The Ark of the Covenant was an ornately-decorated storage chest and religious artifact. According to Christian and Jewish tradition, it contained the Tablets of Stone on which God had transcribed for Moses the Ten Commandments, Aaron's miracle-inducing rod, and a pot of manna.[1]
Wrapped in gold plating, the Ark was later hidden in the Jerusalem Vault beneath the remains of Solomon's Temple. At this time, it also housed an Apple of Eden between the wings of the cherubim on its lid. In July 1191,[2] the Levantine Assassin Malik Al-Sayf took the Apple from the Ark while on a mission assigned to him, his brother Kadar, and Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad by their Mentor Al Mualim.[3]
