Leonius was a member of the Roman Hidden Ones who operated in the Roman Empire during the 1st century. His assassination of the Roman Emperor Caligula made him a legendary figure among the Assassins.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Assassination of Caligula[edit | edit source]

Caligula, the third Roman Emperor, was a violent ruler whose reign was supported and influenced by the Order of the Ancients. As such, the Roman Hidden Ones conspired to eliminate him and assigned Leonius to carry out the assassination. On 24 January 41 CE,[1] the Hidden One stabbed Caligula with a dagger in an underground corridor beneath Palatine Hill, killing him.[2]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

By the time of the Renaissance, Leonius had become a legendary figure among the Assassins, the successors of the Hidden Ones, and he was posthumously honored as one of their own. A tomb dedicated to him was built beneath Santa Maria della Visitazione in Venice, Italy. By 1497, the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore explored the tomb and took the hidden seal from the tomb's sarcophagus, which later allowed him to obtain the Armor of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad sealed in the Sanctuary beneath the Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni where a statue of Leonius, alongside other celebrated Assassins, had been erected.[3]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Historically, Caligula was assassinated by Cassius Chaerea, one of the Praetorian Guard.
