"'Abis is a stain on all this land."
―Hind's servant on 'Abis, 860s.[src]-[m]

'Abis (died 860s)[1] was a criminal in al-Ula, having started out as a petty thief before becoming a murderer who acted as the head of a robbers gang that terrorized the valley,[2] operating under the true leader Nimlot.[3]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Born[2] and raised[4] in al-Ula, 'Abis was described as "sadistic and utterly without mercy",[2] having begun his criminal career as a young man. Obsessed with poison, he brewed experimental mixtures[2] in a laboratory within Musa ibn Nusayr Fort, which he controlled, and used the prisoners as live test subjects.[1]

In the 860s, Nimlot arranged for 'Abis and his men to ambush and capture the visiting Alamut Hidden One Basim ibn Ishaq, who had traveled to the region in search of his father Ishaq ibn Khalid.[5] With the threat the Hidden One posed seemingly nullified, 'Abis continued running the prison with an iron fist and testing out new poisons. Though the death of a well-respected silversmith was thought to be the harbinger of consequences for 'Abis, his downfall came when Basim escaped his cell and confronted 'Abis in his lab. In the resulting fight, he fatally wounded 'Abis, but not without getting stabbed with a poisonous dagger in turn. Basim fled the prison seeking medical aid, and while he recovered, his merchant friend Dervis infiltrated the complex and retrieved the dagger for Basim to use.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

'Abis is a fictional character from Valley of Memory, the free 2025 downloadable expansion for the 2023 video game Assassin's Creed: Mirage. Like the character Abbas Sofian in Assassin's Creed (2007), his name derives from the Arabic word عباس (ʕabbās), which when rendered as the adjective عَبَّاس means "stern, scowling, surly"[6] or "the one who frowns".[4]
