―Kabeer to the captive Hidden Ones, 860s.[src]-[m]

Kabeer Al-Jund (died 860s) was an Abbasid captain who led a group of Tahirid soldiers to attack the Hidden Ones' camp of Alamut.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In the 9th century, the area which Alamut was situated in was governed by the Persian Tahirid dynasty. In the early 860s, the Hidden Ones of Alamut procured a deal with the Tahirids to provide them protection from their enemies, the Order of the Ancients.[1] However, Baghdad's governor Muhammad ibn Tahir, pressured by the Order who controlled the caliphate, was later forced to make a deal in exchange for dissuading Abu 'Abdallah's challenge to the Abbasid throne. He asked his cousin Abdallah ibn Tahir to remove the Tahirids' protection of Alamut, leaving the Hidden Ones' camp vulnerable.[2]

Kabeer unwittingly became a pawn of the Order and was sent to lead a large Tahirid force in a surprise attack on the camp. Many Hidden Ones were slaugtered in the ensuing battle, and some of them, including Mentor Rayhan, were captured by Kabeer and his men, who interrogated them for the location of a hidden temple.[3]

As Rayhan remained silent, Kabeer began executing his fellow captive Hidden Ones in an attempt to get him to talk. However, before he could execute the Mentor himself, Kabeer and his men were killed by the Master Assassin Basim ibn Ishaq, which ultimately allowed the Hidden Ones to repel the Tahirid attack.[3]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Kabeer (كبير) is an Arabic name meaning "large" or "great", while Al-Jund (الجند) translates to "the soldier". As such, Kabeer's full name can be roughly translated to "large soldier", referencing his imposing size and occupation.
