Biography[edit | edit source]
Disappearance of Hundbeorht[edit | edit source]
Serving as an abbess of Lincoln at least since the reign of Hundbeorht, Acha was a close and loyal friend of the ealdorman's family, even befriending his son Hunwald, and taught him scriptures as he grew older. By the early 870s, Hundbeorht's health began to fail, which led him to spend time at the local hospice, where Acha often took care of him.[1]
The ealdorman, fearing for Hunwald's wellbeing and safety given his young age, arranged for his son to be "exiled" out of the city and shire, while he intended to spend his final time at the Bolingbroc Castle. Hundbeorht's loyal associates including Acha were unaware of his plans, and he disappeared shortly after. Knowing he may not have much time life, Acha arranged for a priest to administer Hundbeorht's last rites, while keeping his disappearance a secret from Hunwald in cased in return.[1]
