Wiltshire (Old English: Wiltunscire) is a county in the South East of England.

History

Viking Age

Prior to the Battle of Chippenham in 878, Guthrum chose the town of Werham as a safe haven for the Danes, to provide a foothold for an attack on Winchester. Around the same time, Alfred the Great gained control over the fyrd of Wiltunscire, who were overlooking the River Thames and the Icknield Way.

Modern Era

Wiltshire was mentioned in a poem in a 1738 almanac published by Benjamin Franklin.

Templar Lord Cardigan became an MP in 1818, representing Marlborough, a small region of Wiltshire. Lord Cardigan became quite unpopular, and was badly assaulted at a rally in 1832.
