Valérie Duclos (née Monvoisin; died 1793/94) was the daughter of Marguerite Monvoisin and one of the granddaughters of Catherine Monvoisin, who was better known as the poisoner "La Voisin" ("The Neighbor").[1]

Early life[edit | edit source]
After Marguerite carried on with the family business, she had two daughters, Valérie and Amélie Monvoisin.[1] Before her death, Marguerite left a document stipulating that her fortune was to be given to the next eldest female in the family. Valérie attained the monetary fortune while giving Amélie the items and tools of the family business. In time, Valérie was married and later had a son, Pierre Duclos. However, with her marriage, the family fortune was now controlled by her husband.[2]
Widowhood[edit | edit source]
During the French Revolution, Valérie lost her husband after he asphyxiated from an illness. Concerned about his fortune, Valérie was not given ownership of his finances because her husband's last will dictated that his fortune was to be controlled by a family friend, Georges Villiers-Segonzac, and a stipend was to be given to their son Pierre. Enraged, she challenged Georges over the will with another document from her husband, in which she was named the sole inheritor of their family fortune.[2]
However, Valérie lost her appeal and planned to denounce Georges before the Committee of Public Safety. To make matter worse, she soon learned that her son had entered a romantic relationship with one of her old friends, Lucille Thucet. Due to the large age difference, Valérie believed that Lucille was attempting to marry into the family to obtain the fortune herself, and began opposing the relationship. The combined stress of all her problems eventually caused Valérie to snap during a dinner party, and she stormed out of the festivities, heading to the garden.[2]
Death[edit | edit source]
During the dinner party, Valérie was given a cup of hot chocolate by Georges to calm her nerves. After she drank the hot chocolate and was left alone, she fell ill and died in the garden. Upon his investigation, the French Assassin Arno Dorian discovered that Valérie's sister Amélie had poisoned her for her own claim to the family fortune. After rightfully accusing Amélie, Arno took her to jail for Valérie's murder.[2]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
It is implied that Valérie poisoned her husband due to his sudden death, but no more evidence was found to support it.
