Georges Villiers-Segonzac was a family friend of the Duclos and trustee of Valérie Duclos' late husband's testament.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Early life[edit | edit source]
An old family friend to the Duclos, Georges was given authority and control of the Duclos' fortune, which entailed both Mr. Duclos and Valérie's family fortune that had been passed down by her mother, Marguerite Monvoisin, and her grandmother, Catherine Monvoisin.[1]
In legal matters, Valérie fought against Georges over the will and even presented her own document stipulating her husband's desire to give the fortune to her. However, due to the law, Valérie was unable to attain the fortune, which remained with Georges and funded her son Pierre Duclos' own allowance. Eventually, Valérie planned to denounce Georges to the Committee of Public Safety and call for his execution.[1]
Dinner party murder[edit | edit source]
During a dinner party, Georges and the other guests saw Valérie storm out in the garden after suffering an emotional breakdown. While sitting on the terrace with a cup of brandy, Georges was approached by Valérie's sister Amélie Monvoisin, who suggested that he give her a cup of hot chocolate as a peace offering. An oblivious Georges gave the hot chocolate to Valérie to calm her nerves, only for Valérie to die moments after drinking it.[1]
The crime was later investigated by the French Assassin Arno Dorian, who spoke with all the witnesses, including Georges. Eventually, the Assassin discovered that Amélie had poisoned the hot chocolate, hoping to inherit the family fortune after her sister's death, and had framed Georges to cover her tracks. Once the truth came to light, Amélie was brought to justice.[1]
