Burning

Why, what happens when you burn them? I've looked around the internet and only found one walkthrough mentioning the burning, saying something happened in the future. For me personally, I left after convincing the woman to leave, donating rations, came back and they were all dead, lying there on the ground. How does burning them differ in outcome?
