Talk:Notes from Eivor's travels
Possible name[edit source]
I was think Viking Expansion notes might work best for this as it covers all the locations and the time period. Also I think that all notes should be here whether or not they could also be tied to certain memories/quests. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 17:53, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- That naming is definitely a good suggestion, a lot better than what I came up with. I'm fine with keeping all notes here, I could serve as a nice collection of everything. Kennyannydenny (talk) 20:24, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- Well I think we should have an actual article for them just like we have for Origins so its easier (sorta) for more casual users of the site to find them. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 20:35, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah this page will be moved to the main space under a correct name when 'done', at least I made it with that in my mind. It has to at least be decided if all notes should be on the page, or just ones not tied to a memory. If there's no opposition in a week i'd suggest with adding all that were removed back to this page (and adding the ones that are only on memory pages) and then moving this article to main space. I don't want to overstep my boundaries by pushing this out into the mainspace myself but I think you are good for it now, KAD. Any missing notes can be annotated here on the talkpage. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 20:47, 9 August 2021 (UTC)
- It's not overstepping boundries at all, I don't mind at all. I've moved it to the main space. There are still notes missing but it's a good start I think. Kennyannydenny (talk) 12:30, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
Missing notes[edit source]
There are some notes I cannot get myself in my game, related to the Sigrblot Festival:
- Normal thanks from Randvi and Petra when you're *not* dating them
- Special thanks from Tarben when you *are* dating him
Just putting this here to keep in mind in the future. Kennyannydenny (talk) 12:30, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
- other missing notes that I know of
- note about amber and eo mugna at waterfall near Deirdre's hut
- note from Brissy the elder about the Rigsogur in the Tamworth crypts
Not sure if their are more. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 14:12, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
- I've added the note about the amber, didn't even know that was there. I also added two notes from Tamworth Fortress, one from the Ragnarsson camp just east of Tamworth, and one from Offchurch. Was Offchurch the one you ment with "Tamworth crypts"? (Offchurch is the location where you capture the King of Mercia in the crypts). I couldn't find any crypts in Tamworth Fortress itself. Kennyannydenny (talk) 16:39, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
- No, I think there’s a church in southern Tamworth that has a basement where we collected one of the Rigsogur pages and off to the side there is another note by Brissy the elder talking about how we wants to make Rig as famous as Ragnar and Beowulf by writing his saga. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 16:47, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
- There are no Rigsosur pages in Tamworth, but I found the note you mentioned in Repton's crypt along with another, and added both to the list. Thanks for the tips! Kennyannydenny (talk) 17:48, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
- I feel foolish but yes Repton not Tamworth. Also that note is why the Beowulf mission should feel so weird. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 18:07, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
- There is a note in Colcestre in the "ramparts" of the Temple at the centre. It is called "Challenge". I can't add it because just clicking on "Edit" means wainting 2 minutes for the page to load and then editing the multi-notes boxes just crashes the whole thing when I save, it's a nightmare. I also forgot how to add my user name and time and all that. My user name is DareDevil410 (the guy who created egyptian notes and wrote 90% of it). Glad to see the tradition was continued for valhalla, looks really good. I just started playing now and don't have the time to contribute much to this page, only the gang-related notes interest me.

Duplicates notes[edit source]
I think if a duplicate note shows up in a multiple locations we should transcribe the letter again rather than say "see above" or whatever. If the notes are tied to memories then in the memory pages it would make sense to say that Eivor found a duplicate without transcribing it another time but not on the this article. Translations and Ciphers[edit source]
How do we want to format this for notes? We have a couple notes in SOP that are written in Latin and then put through an encryption? With dialogue we've just done parentheses as it's usually just a single word or phrase. Other instances we've used footnotes for like the old Shay memories or the Atbash cipher on some of Layla's files. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 18:35, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
- Hmm... Writing the original text and translation would be too long all at once, but we still should have the translation and a sentence on how to decode and read it. To me, Eivor is reading documents in-universe in a language and/or (anachronistic) ciphers she cannot possibly know, so I think we can file the translation in Behind the scenes as we've done with Shay's Versailles memories, even if the text would be affixed to the page bottom instead of the body. – Darman (talk) 00:30, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah this is a wonky lore issue because we know the animus does translate the text whether Eivor understands it or not except in like a few unexplained cases. I'm thinking instead of the BTS like we have for Shay we do the Notes section like we do for Layla's personal files and the one cipher there. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 00:55, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
Inventory notes[edit source]
Should notes that don't persist in the overworld and instead wind up in your inventory be removed from here? I was thinking this page was specifically for notes that don't get catalogued elsewhere. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 20:38, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- As far as I know, no notes that are only added to the inventory are added to the list, I at least haven't added any. Did you encounter any on the list? Kennyannydenny (talk) 20:20, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
- Off the top of my head the guard letter and the strange letter from the Hidden quest in SoP wind up in the inventory and do not persist in the overworld. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 21:05, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
- Oh ok, I haven't started SoP yet. If the letter isn't persistant in the overworld I personally never added them, I think those belong elsewhere (not sure yet where), this was mainly a page for documents found at the various places laying about. Kennyannydenny (talk) 07:41, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

Display of the notes[edit source]
Due to the many notes on the game, this page is really lenghty and, therefore, is hard to someone quickly find the ones they're looking for. I suggest implementing a new way of displaying them. Actually, @RealBearZ found an efficient way of doing so on the Discord server, which is splitting the notes in boxes designated for a specific area in a specific region. - TiagoFF (talk) 17:42, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
Viking Expansion instead of Viking Age?[edit source]
Why is this page named "Viking Expansion notes" instead of at least "Viking Age notes"? Viking Age at least refers to a period of time while Viking expansion refers to a particular movement or phenomenon. That this is titled "Viking Expansion notes" currently suggests that it is notes all about Viking migration as opposed to writings a particular Viking, Eivor, encountered throughout her travels.
For that matter, I think "Viking Age notes" is a poor name as well, but it is at least less misleading. "Egyptian notes" (notes written by Egyptians and/or solely in the Egyptian language?) and "Abbasid Caliphate notes" (notes written by the Abbasid Caliphate?) are also misleading names. We need to return to investigating how to better title these pages. Conjectural names are hard, but they need to at least serve to indicate as well as possible the content of the page.
