Appearances[edit source]

This is an ongoing discussion.

So this might be a topic for Cyf, but the Khmer Empire collapsed in 1431. Both Forgotten Temple and Apocalypse take place way after that. So does this really appear in those media? Lacrossedeamon (talk) 23:24, 26 February 2025 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure Forgotten Temple is set during 1425, that's what the first issue summary says. Or did I overlook something in later issues? – Darman (talk) 23:40, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
1725. It's following Edward's adventures post Black Flag. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 23:50, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
Lol, oops, misread its date as being 14XX for some reason. – Darman (talk) 01:25, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
I wanna get Cyf's take on this though because pre 1431 and post 1431 Cambodia seems to be the same polity just with a moved capital and diminished influence. So I wonder if it's more a western view on Cambodian historiography that isn't reflected by eastern scholars. Lacrossedeamon (talk) 01:37, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
I have been unable to get my hands on the 1 academic book about the period (Mak Phoeun's Histoire du Cambodge : de la fin du XVIe siècle au début du XVIIIe), but in David Chamber's 2007 book, A History of Cambodia, he says: "Because this shift of emphasis [away from Angkor] was accompanied by so few supposedly Angkorean activities [...], authors have often spoken of decline or collapse where change or transformation would be more appropriate terms." (pages 92-93) He also takes care to mention that while people and insitutions migrated "southward to the vicinity of Phnom Penh, where the capital of Cambodia was to remain for the next six hundred years" (page 94), the region of Angkor was still quite heavily populated, and several temples and buildings in the region were restored in the early years of what some call the post-Angkor period. - Soranin (talk) 15:40, 27 February 2025 (UTC)

Could it just be that Hendrik was going off info that was two centuries out of date while writing his sea log? He and Edward and co. don't know the Empire's long since collapsed? VilkaIsBack (talk) 09:26, 27 February 2025 (UTC)

Does the term "Khmer Empire" actually get used in text of FT and if so in what context? Lacrossedeamon (talk) 20:39, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
In episode 2 they use "Khmer Kingdom", referring to Angkor as "the lost ruins of the Khmer Kingdom" and "the lost city of the Khmer Kingdom". - Soranin (talk) 22:58, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
