The Salpêtrière Hospital (French: Hôpital de la Salpêtrière), later merged with another hospital and renamed the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, is an institute located in the La Bièvre district of Paris, France. During the French Revolution, it was as much an asylum as a prison, housing many individuals that were deemed unfit to walk the streets, such as vagabonds, beggars, and prostitutes.
History[edit | edit source]
Sometime during the Revolution, an asylum warden named Leroux was murdered by his deputy Hugo Soulière, who had tired of waiting to be promoted. The Assassin Arno Dorian investigated the crime and realized Soulière was the culprit despite the latter's extensive efforts to cover up his tracks; the deputy was subsequently arrested and brought to justice.[1]
Jacques Roux, a radical Roman Catholic priest, was transferred to the Salpêtrière Hospital at some point, but the Templars intended to release him and have him continue the Reign of Terror, as Maximilien de Robespierre's reputation had begun to weaken. A group of Assassins attempted to eliminate the priest, but failed and were imprisoned at the asylum. On 10 February 1794, Roux was released, but Arno and a team of Assassins, having freed their captured comrades, assassinated him before he could leave the property.[2]
Around 1887, Jean-Martin Charcot, the French neurologist regarded as the founder of modern neurology, held a clinical lecture at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, where he demonstrated hypnosis on a patient. The lecture would later be depicted in the painting A Clinical Lesson at the Salpêtrière by André Brouillet.[3]
