Pluto
Pluto is the Roman god of the underworld. He is the brother of Jupiter [citation needed] and Neptune[1], and the husband of Proserpina. [citation needed]
His Greek counterpart is Hades.
Influence[edit | edit source]
When the Medjay Bayek of Siwa hunted down a wealthy Roman woman, Gaia Afrania, she begged Pluto to save her, promising a variety of sacrifices.[2]
In the 870s, Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir encountered the ruins of a Temple dedicated to him in southern Lincolnshire, England.[3]
During the Renaissance, the Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni had a statuette featuring Pluto. Along with the statue of his brother Neptune, the statuette of Pluto worked as a key opening a storage containing 2000 florins.[1]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The Monteriggioni statuette of Pluto seems to be based on the sculpture Pluton enchaînant Cerbère by Augustin Pajou. As the statue was made in 1760, the statuette is anachronistic. In addition, the version in Assassin's Creed II lacks Cerberos and his chain, but is otherwise identical to Pajou's.
