Neptune is the Roman god of fresh water and the seas. He is the brother of Jupiter and Pluto, and the husband of Salacia. His equivalent in Greek mythology is Poseidon.

Influence

In Egypt during the 1st century BCE, the Medjay Bayek of Siwa found and wielded a trident called Neptune's Grasp.

During the Renaissance, the Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni had a statue featuring Neptune. Along with the statue of his brother Pluto, the statuette of Neptune worked as a key opening a storage containing 2000 florins.

Among pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy, Neptune's name was often invoked. While Edward Kenway did so at least on one occasion, Samuel Bellamy and Alonzo Batilla were quite fond of using it. Rupiya was also known to regularly invoke Neptune's name, typically when expressing surprise.

Behind the scenes

The statuette of Neptune in Assassin's Creed II seems to be based on the central statue of the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna, Italy. As the fountain was completed in 1565 and the statue affixed to it in 1567, the statuette is anachronistic.
