Peleus was the mortal king of the Myrmidons and as the husband of the Nereid Thetis, the father of the hero Achilles in Greek mythology. He was also the brother of Telamon and thus the uncle of Ajax.

At his wedding to Thetis, the goddess Eris dropped a golden apple into the proceedings as a prize for beauty. This led the goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite to compete, calling on the Trojan prince Paris to judge. Upon being promised Helen of Sparta, Paris named Aphrodite the most beautiful. Paris' kidnapping of Helen soon led to the Trojan War.[1].

During the Peloponnesian War, a xiphos which had allegedly belonged to Peleus was kept in a chest in Artemisia Fort on the island of Kos. The Spartan misthios Kassandra claimed the sword when she infiltrated the fort.[2]
