Gold & Crystal - The Lost Treasure of Edward is an upcoming international, real-world alternate reality game and armchair treasure hunt. Announcend on May 13, 2026, the project is an official cross-promotional licensing collaboration between French video game publisher Ubisoft and the European treasure hunt logistics startup Unsolved Hunts. The event serves as a promotional campaign for the launch of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, a full modern remake of the 2013 video game Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The competition officially commences on November 9, 2026, and organizers project that its multi-layered cryptographic puzzles will take between two and five years for the global community to solve. The first individual to successfully decode all clues will win a hidden physical chest buried in the Caribbean containing bullion and jewelry valued at $500,000.

Overview and Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Unlike traditional digital marketing campaigns, Gold & Crystal is an armchair treasure hunt executed entirely through remote, physical, and historical deduction. Participants do not require prior experience with the Assassin's Creed franchise, nor are they required to play the accompanying video game.

Mechanics[edit | edit source]

To participate, players must purchase a "clue pack" to receive unique account verification credentials for a centralized digital dashboard. The core competition consists of 15 progressive riddles embedded within an array of materials, including an encrypted message in a bottle, a detailed logistical map of the Caribbean, and a collection of historical letters and text archives. The riddles rely primarily on general logic, cryptography, historical knowledge, and intuition. The digital interface natively offers a specialized open-source toolbox featuring integrated links to mapping tools like Google MyMaps and text analysis sites like Dcode. Once all 15 components are decrypted, they yield an exact geographic location in the Caribbean. The first player to submit the precise coordinates via the online portal wins the game and secures travel accommodations to unearth the physical chest. While players are permitted and encouraged to form collaborative groups, the prize can legally only be awarded to a single designated individual.

Lore and Integration[edit | edit source]

The overarching narrative of the hunt is fully integrated into the fictional universe of the Assassin's Creed franchise. Players assume the role of an operative recruited by the antagonistic mega-corporation Abstergo Industries. The assignment involves auditing a set of recovered, highly encrypted historical documents formerly owned by the 18th-century pirate-turned-Assassin Edward Kenway.

Prize Valuation[edit | edit source]

The grand prize consists of a handcrafted replica of the treasure chest featured in Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced. To hedge against global economic market volatility, the contents are actively managed by physical asset firm Aucoffre and split into two distinct asset classes. First, a hoard of solid gold bullion coins stamped with the official game logo. Organizers guarantee that the physical weight and purity of the coins will be adjusted at the exact time of discovery to maintain the promised valuation of €300,000/$350,000. Second, a detailed, one-of-a-kind artistic replica of the Crystal Skull artifact from the video game, cast in pure rock crystal and encrusted with a genuine Mexican opal, valued in total at €125,000/$150,000.

Release[edit | edit source]

The game restricts eligibility strictly to legal adults. It is accessible to residents across North America, Central and Latin America, Oceania, Europe, and select countries in Asia (South Korea, Singapore) and Africa (Morocco, Algeria, South Africa). Customers who pre-order any distribution package receive immediate entry to a 10-hour digital prologue quest. Completing the prologue provides a decisive competitive advantage by unlocking full puzzle servers one week before the public launch. Additionally a preview puzzle was provided alongside Ubisoft's announcement with 10 random contestants who solved it by May 23rd receiving the digital version of the hunt for free.
