Kyokaiji Temple

Kyokaiji Temple was a Buddhist temple situated in eastern Kamakura Valley in Harima, Japan.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1582, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke arrived at the temple and met with newfound ally and former soldier Nakamura Tadashige of the Bessho clan to discuss the next steps to kill Bessho Harumasa, the Ox, and end his cause. There, they went over Harumasa's war plans and sought to seek help from a merchant named Hiromichi in Takasago while also trying to find a rōnin who, along with his fellow conscripts, turned against the Ox.[1]

After garnering help from Hiromichi[2] and allying themselves with the rōnin Koshiro,[3] Naoe, Yasuke, and their allies all attacked Miki Castle, ultimately leading to Harumasa's death, ending his plans for Harima. From Harumasa's death, Koshiro left to find shelter at the temple while Tadashige tended to the place, making it a safe haven for those affected by the war.[4] However, learning of Koshiro's betrayal and his part in the Ox's death, his former commander Genzaburo ordered his warriors to find and kill Koshiro at the temple. Fortunately, he survived, barely, from the attack.[5]

Fortunately, Naoe returned to the temple and saw Koshiro injured. Discussing his attack, she promised to hunt Genzaburo and his unit down.[5] At some point, Naoe and Yasuke recovered two lost pages scattered around its grounds. They also setup a kakurega near the temple.[6]
