Shiba Tanomo was a Japanese samurai from the Aizu domain of the Tokugawa shogunate. He was the father of Shiba Atsuko and Shiba Ibuka, two young siblings that would fight in the Boshin War to preserve the traditions of the samurai against the encroaching influence of the Templar-backed Imperial Court of Kyoto. Tanomo trained his children in the ways of the samurai though he expected that his son would become a warrior just like him while his daughter would simply be a good wife for a nobleman in waiting. Unbeknownst to Tanomo, Atsuko would disguise herself as a male soldier in an ashigaru battalion to watch over Ibuka nor was he aware that they were involved in an incident that had bandits try to rob them only to be killed by Atsuko.

Tanomo would participate in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi but he was eventually killed. His death led to Atsuko and Ibuka breaking their bonds for a while until the Battle of Aizu where he would die while carrying his sister away from the battlefield.[1]
