Apep, or Apophis, was an ancient Egyptian deity embodying chaos. He was usually depicted as a giant serpent that could devour the hearts - and thus the souls - of the dead. In mythology, Apep and Ra have an eternal battle which represents the cycle of night and day.

In 48 BCE, the Medjay Bayek experienced a drug-induced hallucination in which he fought and defeated Apep with a glowing bow and arrows aboard Ra's solar barge. A decade later, when Bayek seemingly visited the Duat as part of his mision to end the Curse of the Pharaohs, Apep's decaying skeleton could be found.

Trivia

Apep's role as the Devourer is also shared by a female monster named Ammit. She has the head of a crocodile, the front half of a lioness and the rear half of a hippo. If the heart is heavier than the feather on the scale, she would eat the heart. Once Ammit swallowed the heart, the soul was believed to become restless forever; this was called "to die a second time".
