Takeko was a member of the Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins from the province of Aizu, a feudal domain loyal to the Tokugawa shogunate.
They took part in the Boshin War in 1868. During the war, Takeko had unmasked a 16-year old girl known as Atsuko, who had disguised herself as a male soldier to fight on the frontlines with her brother Ibuka.[1]
Trivia
- Takeko is a Japanese feminine name derived from the kanji 武 meaning "military" or 竹 meaning "bamboo" and the suffix 子 (ko) meaning "child".
- They share their name with Nakano Takeko, an onna-musha who fought in the Boshin War.
