Matsuo was a spy and agent in the Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins during the Boshin War.
In 1867, he worked with French Army officer Jules Brunet to mobilize all Assassin agents in Japan to ensure the victory of the Tokugawa shogunate and their allies over the Templar-backed Imperial Court. Besides working with the Assassins, Matsuo would infiltrate the personal battalion of British Templar William Lloyd by disguising himself as one of his ronin, "Masajiro". Matsuo later encountered Nakano Takeko's protégé Shiba Atsuko during an assault on the enemy camp but luckily for him he was spared as the latter chose to kill the one battling her mentor. He met Atsuko once again after the Battle of Aizu, offering her the opportunity to join the Assassins citing the deeds of her Ibuka, such as saving her from death and preventing the Musashi Masamune from being stolen by the Templars. Eventually Atsuko joined the Brotherhood much to the delightment of Matsuo, in spite of the Imperial victory over the shogunate forces.[1]
