Kaori Kagami
Kaori Kagami is a Japanese doctor working for an Abstergo clinic and a member of the Templar Order.
Biography
In 2016, Dr. Kagami worked at the Madrid Abstergo Foundation Rehabilitation Center and was assigned to the Assassin Lin, a descendant of the Assassin Shao Jun.[1] Kagami was not able to explore the memories of Jun past a certain point as the facility became overrun by the Assassin prisoners escaping. While the Assassins attacked, Kagami cowered under a desk as the catalyst of the breakout Callum Lynch fired an arrow overhead.[2]
In 2019, Dr. Kagami was treating Kō Risa, a teenager who had trouble controlling her violent behavior. As part of the treatment, the Templar convinced the young woman to relive the memories of her ancestor, the Assassin Shao Jun, through an Animus.[3]
After a rocky first try in the Animus, Dr. Kagami calmed the shaken girl, assuring her that it was only a simulation and nothing could harm her there. Ending the session, the two women talked in the doctor's office, with Risa unconvinced about the treatment, while Dr. Kagami read about her violent tendencies. Kagami then implored Risa to work with her, and after the session, Kō Risa left. Kagami spoke on the phone with a fellow Templar, discussing her true goal of finding the location of Jun's "treasure".[3]
In their second session, Dr. Kagami tended to Kō Risa as she desynchronized after reliving a traumatic memory. Dr. Kagami insisted her patient rest, but the girl wanted to continue her treatment. After Risa ended another Animus session, she asked about the Assassins and the Templars, and Dr. Kagami talked to her about them, explaining that the girl's violent behavior was caused by her ancestor's genes. Risa returned into the Animus, and while she was under, an Abstergo employee entered the room to warn Dr. Kagami about overexposing her. Dr. Kagami simply snapped at the man that she was doing what she had to in order to get results.[4]
During the session, Kō Risa was affected by the guilt felt by Shao Jun over reliving the 1526 Macau fires. After the session, Dr. Kagami consoled her patient again by reminding her that it was all a simulation and that nothing therein was real. After the girl left, Dr. Kagami had a voice call with her superior Ellen Kaye, who reminded her about what had happened at the Madrid facility, warning her not to let it happen again.[1] The next session, Dr. Kagami was asked by Risa about the hallucinations she had been having, but the doctor explained it to be temporary. After Dr. Kagami reassured Risa, the young subject continued her treatment in the Animus.[5]
While Risa was in the Animus, Dr. Kagami instructed her assistant to record all of their information as she does not to replicate the mishap in Madrid. After Risa awoke from the simulation, Dr. Kagami noticed Risa was more cautious about the effects and began to wonder if her subject was retaining any abilities from her sessions.[5] After Risa went back into Animus,[6] Dr. Kagami saw her subject awake after reliving Shao Jun's memory of the funeral of her mentor Wang Yangming and noted Risa being distraught before she left the facility.[7]
When Risa returned back for her next session,[8] Dr. Kagami watched over her, unknown of Risa's change in perception of the doctor herself. However, Risa stopped her session once she awoke from Shao Jun saving Empress Zhang Qijie and Dr. Kagami was confronted about the effects being more than temporary. Realizing the worse, Dr. Kagami furiously expressed that her work to achieve Shao Jun's treasure was close before locking the door on Risa. Holding a pistol, she demanded Risa to go back into the Animus.[9]
Dr. Kagami signaled guards to come in and then they forced Risa back into Animus.[10] While Risa was in the Animus, the doctor informed her assistant to dispose of the girl after they find the Precursor box. However, Shao Jun's memories showed that the box was out of her grasp and Dr. Kagami loses her patience as her work was a dead end. In her outburst, she was then confronted by Risa.[11] Within moments, Dr. Kagami patronized Risa over her self-doubt but became shocked once she heard Japanese Assassin Kiyoshi Takakura and Risa's cousin Mari infiltrate the building.[12]
At the same time, Dr. Kagami was disarmed by Risa, who also took down the guards in the room. Held at gunpoint herself, the doctor watched Risa thank her for her new outlook on life before Risa shot and destroyed her Animus. Afterwards, after Kiyoshi and the girls left, Dr. Kagami was left in shambles over her failure to listen to Kaye's advice.[12]
