Jean d'Espaignet was a French judge from Bordeaux who specialized in diplomacy.[1] He was originally coresponsible for the Labourd witch-hunt of 1609 alongside Pierre de Lancre, though he was reassigned to the French-Spanish border in order to neutralize a conflict with Spain.[2]

Jean d'Espaignet was described by Pierre de Lancre as a loud drunk uninterested in decorum and protocol in private while in public being rigid, cold and pratically only speaking in legal terminology and references to the scriptures.[2]
