Cristoval de Merlo
Cristoval de Merlo was a Spanish Inquisitor banker who lived during the 15th century.
In 1489, Cristoval was given a painting belonging to Leonardo da Vinci by an Inquisitor captain Diego de Burgos, who won the painting from the nobleman Jaime Del Rada. Cristoval kept the painting underground beneath a slum in Madrid and installed a number of traps to protect it. However, the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins were able to disarm the traps and recover the painting for themselves.[1]
