Benjamin (ship)
The Benjamin was a schooner owned and operated by the pirate Benjamin Hornigold during the early 18th century.
In 1718, Hornigold's Benjamin and Edward Thatch's Queen Anne's Revenge attacked a British Man O' War in order to obtain medicines for the settlement at Nassau. During the engagement, the Benjamin was severely damaged and forced to withdraw.
One year later, the newly Templar-affiliated Hornigold tracked Edward Kenway in an attempt to locate the Observatory. Though she managed to lure Kenway into an ambush, Kenway's Jackdaw sank the attacking Royal Navy vessels and severely damaged the Benjamin. Lost in the fog and taking on water, the schooner ran aground on the Santanillas islands and Hornigold was eventually assassinated by his former protégé. At some point, the Benjamin's sails were recovered by Kenway for his own ship.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The Benjamin was extremely powerful for a schooner, being more akin to a frigate in terms of damage that it could deal and take, plus the speed of a schooner. It is similar to the Jackdaw which, despite being only a brig, is powerful enough to defeat even the legendary ships.
- The Benjamin is notably the only ship with a significant role in the story of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag that does not have a figurehead.
- The Benjamin is the only schooner with a Captain's Cabin, which is similar to that of the Morrigan. It is also the only full-cannoned schooner that is fought in the game.
- If observed with a spyglass, the Benjamin's level will be displayed as 20, making it the only schooner of such a high level.
- During the memory "Murder and Mayhem", if the Benjamin is observed with a spyglass, its nation icon will be that of the Pirates, despite Hornigold having joined the Templars and become a pirate hunter for the Royal Navy at this point in the story.
- If the player manages to fully deplete the Benjamin's health, its sinking animation will play out, immediately followed by the cutscene showing it running aground.
- After assassinating Hornigold, the Benjamin inexplicably disappears from the Santanillas despite being shipwrecked on the islands.
- On certain playthroughs, a glitch can cause the Benjamin to remain on the islands after completing the memory, but it will disappear once Edward fast-travels to another location.
- During the memory "This Old Cove", Mary Read departed the Great Inagua on a vessel identical to the Benjamin.
