Badarud-Din I (died c. 1740) was the 17th Sultan of Sulu, reigning from 1718 until his forced retirement in 1732.[1]
Biography
In 1725, the sultan received a guest at his court: Jan van Aert, the Chief Navigator of the Dutch East India Company, who informed him of a powerful artifact that was in the possession of Jan's associates, the Zhang Wei Union.[2] Sharing a common interest to see the Spanish Empire's dominion over the Philippines brought to an end, Jan promised to deliver the artifact into the sultan's hands to help him gain an advantage over his rivals. In exchange, the sultan guaranteed Jan and his associates' protection for the duration of their stay in Sulu.[3]
When the Zhang Wei Union's members arrived in Sulu, they reluctantly renounced the artifact after being threatened by the Sultanate's fleet, and it was subsequently stored in a warehouse until the arrival of the sultan.[3] However, the Union members later escaped confinement and attempted to recover the artifact, at the same time as the Chinese Assassins led by Xiao Han, who sought the relic for their own ends.[4]
