The Romani or Romanies were a faction for hire, consisting of dancers, fire breathers, street performers and musicians. With their spirited performances, they were sure to make an impression – and distract anyone.[1]

History

The Romani were stateless people originally from the eastern reaches of Persia. Over many centuries, their population migrated west, eventually reaching as far as Eastern Europe and northern Africa.

Sometimes also referred to as Gypsies, the rather unflattering term "Romani" arose from the misconception that they and the Romanian people belonged to the same ethnicity.

Trivia

  • The Romani replaced the Courtesans in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, who were not accepted in Ottoman society.
  • The Romani shouldn't be named as they are in Revelations, as the term "Romani" did not even exist in the 16th century.
    • Interrestingly, in the memory Curse of the Romani, the escorted romani finds it funny that people use the term "gypsy" instead of "romani", saying that the term was "born from the misapprehension that my people are from Egypt".
    • This may be due to current situation in Europe with gypsies and race question.
