Julien du Casse

Julien du Casse (1682 – 1715) was a French arms-dealer and a member of the Templar Order who worked in the West Indies. He also was a nephew of the French buccaneer and Admiral Jean du Casse.
Biography
Early Life
Julien was born in Montpellier, France in 1682. Joining his uncle, Julien took to sea at a young age and fought in the War of the Spanish Sucession. During the war, Julien became disgusted at the French and Spanish monarchy for choosing reputation and bloodlines over talent and skill, but nonetheless continued to serve his country.
In 1704, du Casse deserted from the French Army during the Battle of Vélez-Málaga and instead travelled to Africa to work as a slave trader. However, Julien left for the West Indies, lacking the conviction that required him to work as a slave trader.
For a decade, Julien worked in the West Indies as an assassin and arms dealer to those who were willing to pay him a large sum. Eventually, du Casse met the Governor of Cuba, Laureano de Torres y Ayala, and became close friends and worked under him.
Joining the Templars
In 1715, Julien, Woodes Rogers and Duncan Walpole had arranged a meeting with Laureano Torres, to be inducted into the Templar Order.
Rogers and Julien had been at the Governor's residence in Havana for some time, until they were eventually joined by the man they believed to be Duncan Walpole, who in actuality was a pirate named Edward Kenway, who had assumed his identity in order to claim Walpole's promised reward. During a shooting session between the three, Julien noted the absence of the Hidden Blade in 'Duncan', who mentioned that his previous pair was damaged beyond repair. Julien then handed him a new pair which was collected off dead Assassins.
Rogers and du Casse requested that 'Duncan' show his skills in Assassination techniques. Thanks to Kenway's free-climbing abilities, he was able to mimic those techniques with very little effort.
Eventually, the three were inducted into the Order by Laureano de Torres. There, Torres revealed his plans of locating the Observatory, with the help of a Sage named Bartholomew Roberts, which will further the Templars' goals of a New World Order. Julien expressed his skepticism to the credibility of a Sage, noting it has been over four decades since a Sage was found.
The next morning, Julien and his Templar allies met the captured Sage, and mentioned that a Sage's blood was required to enter the Observatory. While escorting the Sage to Torres' mansion, the Templars managed to fend of an Assassin attack in an attempt to liberate the Sage.
That night, the Templars discovered that the truth of Walpole and apprehended Kenway, who attempted to rescue the Sage, though he had already escaped. Julien and El Tiburón later took Edward to the Spanish Treasure Fleet as a prisoner.
Following this turn of events, du Casse earned Torres' trust and was appointed as Cpatain by the governor, helping him to run weapons, gold and supplies for him, as well as being his hit-man. Julien traveled to his Manor on the Great Inagua, docking his Man O' War, the El Arca Del Maestro, in the island's natural cove.
Unknown to Julien, however, Edward Kenway had escaped his imprisonment aboard the Spanish Treasure Fleet, and sought Julien's ship for use as a defensive measure for the pirate republic of Nassau. Julien was killed by Kenway, who had snuck onto the vessel's rigging and struck the Templar from above.
Kenway took a Templar key that was in Julien's possession. The Templar berated Kenway for his small ambition and cursed him before succumbing to his wounds.

- Julien: (You son of a whore!) As bold as a musket ball, and still half as sharp.
- Edward: I'm sorry about this, mate. But I can't risk you telling your Templar friends about me still kicking around.
- Julien: I pity you, (buccaneer). After all you have seen, after all we have showed you of our Order, still you embrace the life of an ignorant and aimless rogue.
Edward took a key which Julien kept on a chain around his neck.
- Edward: What's this...?
- Julien: Is petty larceny the extent of your ambition? Have you no mind to comprehend the scope of ours? All the empires on Earth, abolished! A free and opened world, without parasites like you! (May the hell you find be of your own making.)
Trivia
- Julien is a French variant of Julian, ultimately derived from Greek ιουλος (ioulos), meaning "downy-bearded". Casse is a French word meaning "broken, cracked, bent".
