Azuchi (安土町) was a city in Omi Province that is today part of Ōmihachiman in Shiga Prefecture, Japan.[1] The city is best known for the Azuchi Castle, which was built by Oda Nobunaga and served as his seat of power.[2]

History

In late June 1582, the ronin Yasuke, formerly a retainer of Nobunaga and a member of the Kakushiba ikki, returned to Azuchi after the Honnō-ji Incident. He had sought to meet with Lady Oichi at the castle to uncover more information about the Shinbakufu, a mysterious group of masked individuals responsible for Honnō-ji Incident.[3] Yasuke also sought out his former teacher Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, who had since moved out of the castle to a residence at the southwestern outskirts of the city.[4]
