Jean d'Espaignet

Jean d'Espaignet was a French judge from Bordeaux who specialized in diplomacy.^[1] He was responsible for overseeing the Labourd witch-hunt of 1609 alongside Pierre de Lancre, before being reassigned to the French-Spanish border in order to neutralize the brewing religious tensions with Spain.^[2]

D'Espaignet was described by De Lancre as a loud drunk uninterested in decorum and protocol in private while in public being rigid, cold, and practically only speaking in legal terminology and references to the scriptures.^[2]
